The Basic Life Support Provider (BLS Provider) course, designed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, is created for healthcare professionals and first responders who provide care to patients in various settings or by those requiring CPR training and BLS certification to enter into a healthcare-related training program.

Only Heart & Stroke branded BLS materials are accepted for use in courses where a Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS completion card is issued.

Students must bring the most recent version of the BLS Provider manual with them to class for use throughout the course and as a source for the open resource exam.

Course Objectives:

The BLS Provider Course focuses on skills rescuers need to know in order to perform high-quality CPR in various scenarios. Paired with high-quality CPR, you will also learn how to respond to choking emergencies.

On completion of the BLS Provider Course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and the impact on survival
  • Recall the steps of the Chain of Survival
  • Identify the signs of a person needing CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR on an adult, child and infant
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
  • Give effective ventilations by using a pocket mask
  • Describe the technique in a choking emergency for an adult, child or infant

Prerequisites:  A current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification or successful completion of the online Heart & Stroke BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge. If you do not have one of these prerequisites, you are not permitted to attend the BLS Renewal course.
